What Is a Board Foot? (And How to Buy Hardwood)
Buying hardwood for the first time is a slightly disorienting experience. The timber isn’t stacked in tidy standard sizes, the prices are quoted in a unit that doesn’t come up anywhere else in daily life, the thicknesses are described in quarters, and there’s a grade stamped somewhere that nobody explains.
None of it is complicated once it’s unpacked. But it does help to understand the system before you’re standing in front of a stack trying to work out whether you’re being offered a good deal.
This guide covers what a board foot actually is, how the maths works, and — just as usefully — how hardwood is genuinely sold, so the trip to the timber yard is less of a guessing game. Preparing that timber once you’ve got it home will be covered separately.
What a board foot actually measures
A board foot is a unit of volume, not length — 144 cubic inches of wood. One board foot is exactly what you’d get from a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long. Change any of those three dimensions and the piece can still be one board foot, as long as the total volume works out the same.
That’s the detail that trips people up first. Two boards can be the same length and contain very different amounts of wood. An 8-inch wide board and a 4-inch wide board, both 8 feet long, aren’t the same purchase — the wider one has twice the timber in it. Pricing by length alone would charge the same for both. Pricing by volume charges for what’s actually there.
The formula
Board feet = (thickness x width x length in inches) / 144
If your length is in feet, which is how timber is usually sold:
Board feet = (thickness x width in inches x length in feet) / 12
Worked example: a board 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, 8 feet long.
(1 x 6 x 8) / 12 = 4 board feet
Buy four of those and you’ve bought 16 board feet, whether they came from one tree or four.
Thickness in quarters
Ask for hardwood and you’ll hear thickness described in quarters — 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4 — rather than plain inches. It’s simpler than it sounds: 4/4 (“four-quarter”) means four quarters of an inch, so 1 inch. 8/4 is 2 inches. Just inches, counted in quarter-inch steps, because rough lumber has historically been specified that way at the sawmill.

Worth knowing before you buy: quarter thickness usually describes the rough-sawn board as it left the saw, not the finished thickness after surfacing. Planing removes material — often something in the region of an eighth of an inch in total — so a board sold as 4/4 typically finishes a little under a true inch. That’s normal, expected, and already priced in. It’s just worth not being caught out by it when you’re planning parts that need to end up a specific thickness.
How hardwood is actually sold
Here’s the thing that surprises most people coming from softwood and sheet goods: hardwood is generally sold random width and length, often shortened to RWL.
You don’t order “six boards, 6 inches by 8 feet” the way you might order dimensional softwood. You buy from what’s in the stack, in whatever widths and lengths that stack happens to contain, and you pay by the board foot for the volume you take away.
This has real consequences for planning. It means you’re selecting and sorting rather than ordering, that the widths you get partly determine how you lay out your parts, and that it’s worth going in person where you can. It also means bringing a tape measure and a rough parts list rather than a fixed shopping list.
Grades, and why the best one often isn’t the right one
American hardwood grading is run by the National Hardwood Lumber Association, and the grades describe how much clear, defect-free wood a board will yield — not how strong it is. That last point is worth underlining: unlike softwood grades, hardwood grades say nothing about structural strength.
The ones you’ll actually encounter:
FAS (from an old term, “Firsts and Seconds”) — the top grade. Boards at least 6” wide and 8’ long, yielding 83 1/3% clear face cuttings. Best for long, wide, clear pieces: table tops, long mouldings, anything where you need big unbroken clear areas.
FAS 1-Face (F1F) and Selects — one face meets FAS, the other meets No. 1 Common. Selects allow smaller boards (4” wide, 6’ long). A cost-effective choice when only one face will be seen.
No. 1 Common — boards at least 3” wide and 4’ long, yielding 66 2/3% up to (but not including) the FAS requirement. Often called “cabinet grade” in the US, because it suits the sizes cabinet doors and furniture parts are actually cut to.
No. 2A Common — 50% clear yield. Sometimes called economy grade; common in flooring.
Here’s the genuinely useful part, and it can save you a lot of money: for small parts, a lower grade is often the smarter buy. Grades measure the size and proportion of clear cuttings available. If your project needs a lot of short, narrow, clear pieces — which describes box making almost exactly — then No. 1 Common gives you the same clear timber as FAS, just in smaller pieces, at a lower price. Paying a premium for long clear boards and then cutting them into 8-inch parts is paying for something you’re about to saw away.
FAS earns its price when you genuinely need the length and width.
How much to order
Board footage tells you the volume in a board. It doesn’t account for what you’ll lose turning it into parts.
Saw kerf, defects, snipe, grain and colour matching, and plain mistakes all consume timber without contributing to the finished piece. Working out your project’s exact board footage and ordering precisely that is a reliable way to come up short partway through — usually on the last part, in the last hour of the day.
A waste allowance somewhere in the 15–20% range is a common starting point for a straightforward project. Push it higher for knotty or figured stock, or where you’re matching grain across several visible parts.
That last point deserves its own mention. If the parts of your box need to look like they came from the same tree — and on a small piece with four visible sides, they really do — then you’ll be selecting for colour and figure as well as size. That means buying more than the arithmetic suggests, and accepting that some of what you buy is there to give you a choice rather than to end up in the finished piece.
Doing it for a whole project
