Choosing the Right Sheet Material: Plywood, MDF, Chipboard and More

Before a single cut gets made, the material you pick decides most of what happens next — how heavy the sheet is to handle, how it takes screws and glue, whether it can get wet, and what the edges look like once you’re done. Getting this choice right up front saves you from fighting the material for the rest of the build.

Plywood: the strong, versatile default

Plywood is built from thin layers of wood veneer glued together with the grain direction alternating between layers. That cross-grain structure is what gives it real strength in both directions and makes it resistant to warping in a way solid wood isn’t.

Screws and hardware hold well in plywood — much better than in MDF or chipboard — because the alternating grain gives fasteners something to bite into no matter which direction they’re driven. Cabinet-grade hardwood plywood (birch and maple are common face veneers) also takes a clear finish well, since the visible face is real wood grain, not a paper overlay.

The tradeoffs: it costs more than chipboard or OSB, the edges show the layered structure (which either needs edge-banding or becomes a deliberate design feature), and quality varies a lot between sheets — cheap plywood can have voids inside that only show up once you cut into it.

Best for: furniture, cabinet carcases, anything that needs to hold screws securely or take real structural load.

MDF: smooth, stable, and heavy

Medium-density fibreboard is made from wood fibres bonded with resin under heat and pressure, with no grain direction at all. That’s exactly why it machines so cleanly — router bits and saw blades cut it without tearout, edges come out perfectly smooth, and it takes paint beautifully because there’s no grain telegraphing through.

The cost is weight and moisture sensitivity. A sheet of MDF is noticeably heavier than the same size in plywood, and it swells permanently if it gets and stays wet — there’s no drying it back out cleanly the way solid wood sometimes recovers. It also doesn’t hold screws well without pilot holes and often needs cauls or biscuits for a strong glue joint.

Best for: painted furniture, router-heavy projects where a clean edge profile matters, anything staying indoors and dry.

Chipboard (particleboard): cheap and everywhere

Chipboard is compressed wood particles and resin — the least expensive sheet material and the one you’ve probably already got furniture made from without realising it. It’s commonly faced with a melamine or veneer layer for flat-pack furniture and low-cost cabinetry.

It’s the weakest of the group by a clear margin. Screws pull out easily, especially on repeated use (drawer slides and hinges are a common failure point), and it doesn’t tolerate any moisture at all — the edges swell and crumble first. It’s genuinely a fine choice within its actual use case, just not a substitute for plywood where load or fasteners matter.

Best for: budget shelving, flat-pack-style builds, anything low-load and largely decorative.

OSB: structural, not furniture-grade

Oriented strand board is large wood flakes compressed and bonded in layered, cross-oriented mats — visually rough, strong for its cost, and almost exclusively a construction material rather than a furniture one. You’ll see it as roof sheathing, subflooring, and shop jigs and fixtures, not in anything meant to be seen or finished nicely. Worth knowing it exists and where it fits, mainly so you don’t reach for it by mistake when what you actually want is plywood.

Making the call

If you’re unsure, the practical shortcut is: plywood when strength or fasteners matter, MDF when a smooth painted finish matters, chipboard when cost is the deciding factor and the load is light, OSB only for structural or shop-only work. Real projects often mix materials — plywood carcase with an MDF face frame is a common, sensible combination rather than a compromise.
